- Easier to move around when directional knotting
- Lighter
- More compact
- Easier to get the hook under the lace
Cons of using a Wooden Block
- Limited by the size of the block and the nails
- More difficult to block
- Can cause splinters
Blocking a Malleable Head
Blocking lace onto a Malleable head is very similar to blocking onto a wooden block. You start with a piece of colour card of the desired size preferably with the template drawn onto it. This need to be taped onto the block to create a smooth surface. The lace is then cut larger than the card, this is then placed over the card and pinned down making sure to stretch the lace after each pin. If done correctly, the lace should be tight, but you should still be able to lift it off the block slightly. This will allow you to get a knotting hook underneath it.
Pros of using a Malleable Block
- Not Limited by size
- Can be blocked with a template to custom-make the piece for a model
- Multiple Pieces can be made on the same block
Cons of using a Malleable Block
- The hook can get caught easier
- Harder to move around for directional knotting
- Heavier
- Not as easy to transport
Which one do I prefer and Why
Personally, I would prefer to use a malleable head as it will allow me to see what it looks like on the model. The fact that I'm not limited by the size of the block will also allow me to be more creative when creating postiche pieces.
