Whipping, Cast Making and Template Making

Cast Making
To create a cast you tightly stretch a layer of cling film over the area where the piece will sit on the model. This is then reinforced by a layer of sellotape. This is repeated over the same area a few times until you have a sturdy piece that keeps its shape when moved off the model.
After that, the cast you just made can be placed onto a malleable head, taped down and padded out. This can be used to make postiche pieces that are custom fit to the model.
Template Making
To create a template for the postiche pieces, you draw your chosen design onto a coloured card before blocking it. Once the outline has been created, you should then draw individual lines to represent hairs in the directions they naturally grow on other people. This makes it easier to directional knot when the time comes to create the pieces.
Whipping
Whipping is the process of creating folds also known as darts, which are usually in the form of a triangle, within the lace to shape it to a model face or head. It can also be used to repair holes within the lace. Whipping using invisible nylon thread from the base of the dart. You should start from the side where it raises from the lace. Travel up the edge until the tip of the dart is reached. Then turn it around and continue down the other side until reaching the base again. If done correctly it should create a flat surface which shouldn't be noticeable when the hair is knotted onto the lace.
